Vestal, N.Y. -
Stony Brook rallied back from a late eight-point deficit, but Binghamton held the Seawolves off to earn a 65-64 victory on Wednesday night at the Events Center. The loss snapped the Seawolves three-game winning streak as they fell to 8-5 on the season and 1-1 in America East play, while the Bearcats improved to 10-4 and 3-0.
"We really need to shoot better than 50 percent from the free throw line on the road," said head coach Maura McHugh. "That was a huge difference in the game for us."
The Seawolves trailed 48-40 with just under nine minutes remaining before using a 13-5 run over the next 4:44 fueled by three pointers by Sidney Orndorff, Kelly Watson and Mykeema Ford and a three-point play by Farah Vasquez Jacobo to take a 54-53 lead with 5:29 to play.
The two teams would trade leads five more times over the next 1:19 before a layup by Juta Jahilo put the Bearcats up 59-58 with 2:49 on the clock. Laine Kurpniece followed with a pair of free throws to give Binghamton a three-point edge.
The teams traded a pair of baskets each before Dana Ferraro sank a jumper and was fouled on the play with 37 seconds to go. Ferraro missed the free throw, but Jessica Smith came up with the offensive board but was unable to dribble through three Binghamton players and turned it over with SB trailing by just one point.
The Bearcats were unable to convert on their last shot of the game, but the Seawolves had just one second left on the clock and were unable to get off a shot.
Stony Brook came out strong, jumping out to an 11-2 lead three minutes into the contest. The Seawolves would go cold, however, scoring just a pair of baskets over the next 13 minutes, while Binghamton used a 24-4 run to take a 26-15 lead with four minutes to play in the half. SB finally woke up, cutting the lead to seven points behind a three pointer as time ran out and the Seawolves trailed 29-22 at the break.
Ford netted a team-high 19 points, while Orndorff added 13 points and seven boards. Smith, who played just 22 minutes due to foul trouble, netted each of her 11 points in the first half, while Ferraro pulled down 11 rebounds.
Kurpniece led the Bearcats with game-highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Binghamton outrebounded the Seawolves 50-31 in the contest, though it turned the ball over 23 times.
The Seawolves are back in action on Saturday when they travel to take on New Hampshire at 1:00 p.m.
