Durham, N.H. -
Sidney Orndorff netted a career-high 17 points, including a crucial layup with 28 seconds left, to lift Stony Brook to a 72-69 victory over New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon at Lundholm Gymnasium. With the win, the Seawolves improved to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in America East play, while the Wildcats dropped to 9-5 and 1-2.
"That win was huge for us," said head coach Maura McHugh. "We needed to get a split on this two-game road trip, and we really toughed it out at the end to get it done."
The Seawolves held as much as an 11 point lead at 60-49 with 8:12 remaining in the contest before UNH used a 20-8 run over an eight minute span to take a 69-68 advantage with 1:17 to play.
After a Stony Brook timeout, Dana Ferraro found Orndorff all alone under the basket for an easy layup as the Seawolves regained the 70-69 edge.
UNH then turned the ball over and fouled Orndorff, who made 1-of-2 free throws. Ferraro pulled down the rebound on a missed jumper by Emily Hardy and was fouled, making 1-of-2 free throws with two seconds to go to make it 72-69 and seal the win.
Jessica Smith netted a game-high 22 points, including the 1000th of her career, while Mykeema Ford added 15 points, six rebounds, four steals and four assists. Ferraro finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
Danielle Clark led five Wildcats in double figures with 14 points, while Lindsay Adams chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Seawolves are back in action on Wednesday when they host Boston University at 7 p.m.
