ORONO, Maine (AP) - Ernest Turner led four players in double figures with 17 points Wednesday as Maine held off several comebacks in a 62-56 victory over Stony Brook.
"I am proud of the way our team fought back from a 10-point deficit in the second half," said head coach Steve Pikiell. "We will continue to work hard to find a way to win these close games."
Jon Sheets added 13 points, Philippe Tchekane Bofia 12 and 10 rebounds and Olli Ahveniemi 10 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks for Maine (8-11, 3-5 America East).
Down 14-12 early in the first half, Maine used an 11-0 run highlighted by three consecutive baskets from Bofia to take command, 23-14.
Stony Brook (3-15, 1-7 America East) answered with a 13-4 run to even the score and the two teams remained tied at the half, 31-31.
Maine opened the second half with an 14-4 run to open its largest lead of the game, 45-35. Stony Brook responded with an 11-3 run to chip Maine's lead at just two points, but never got any closer.
Maine held off a late run by hitting 8-11 free throws in the final two minutes. Bobby Santiago led Stony Brook with 16 points. Solomon Bamiro added 11 and 12 rebounds.
