The Stony Brook University women's soccer team topped UMBC, 1-0, in a spirited America East match-up Sunday afternoon in Baltimore, Md. With the win, Stony Brook improves to 7-4-1, 2-1 in conference play while UMBC drops to 4-7-2, 0-2.
The lone goal of the game and eventual game-winner came in the 35th minute as the Seawolves capitalized off a Trine Allenberg corner kick. Off the corner kick, junior Kristin Mishrell settled the ball and found junior Jackie Timmes alone in the box. Timmes delivered from 12 yards out into the back right-hand corner of the net to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead. It was Timmes' first goal in a Seawolf uniform and Mishrell's second assist on the game-winning goal in the past two games.
The Retreivers played a shorthanded the final 20 minutes of the game after Nicole Krause was issued her second yellow card in the 71st minute.
Marisa Viola posted her second-consecutive shutout as she made seven saves in goal for the Seawolves.
The Seawolves continue conference play when they host Maine on Thursday, October 12. Kick-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
