Women's Hoops Drops Season Opener at Marist, 72-82

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's basketball team could not overcome an 11-point half-time deficit as the Seawolves fell to the defending MAAC Champions Marist in their season opener, 82-72. It was a tale of two halves as the Seawolves only shot 35.3 percent in the first half and shot 59.4 from the floor in the second half.

The Seawolves only managed to shoot 35.3 percent in the opening stanza and only converted on one of eight free throws as they entered the locker room down 36-25. Sarah Smrdel, dropped 16 first half points to give the Red Foxes a double-digit half-time lead.

Stony Brook came out of the break with new energy and made a strong second half surge. After trailing by as many as 15 at 40-25, the Seawolves went on an 18-3 run fueled by six points from Dana Ferraro to pull within three at 43-40. The Red Foxes fought off the Stony Brook outburst and built thier lead back to five at 59-54. A Farah Vasquez-Jacoba jumper made the score 61-58, but Nikki Flores energized the crowd as she drained a three and gave Marist a six-point advantage at 64-58. Marist would control play for the remainder of the contest and close out the game with a score of 82-72.

Smith led the Seawolves with a double-double as the senior dropped 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Mykeema Ford added 14 points and Ferraro scored 12 in the loss.

Smrdel led all scorers with 24 points, Rachele Fitz added 17 and Meg Dahlman and Flores each scored 11 for Marist.

The Seawolves return to action when they travel to Chicago, Illinois to compete in the DePaul Invitational. Stony Brook's opening round match is Friday, November 11 when the Seawolves battle Illinois State. Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m.
