Women's Basketball falls to Sacred Heart, 77-65

Fairfield, CT. - Sacred Heart shot 50 percent from the field including 7-17 from behind the arc as the Stony Brook women's basketball team was defeated 77-65, at the William H. Pitt Center on Thursday afternoon. Stony Brook is 4-7 on the season while Sacred Heart is 6-5 "We ran into a tough Sacred Heart team," said head coach Maura McHugh. "Our team was unable to get into an offensive flow."

In the first half, the Seawolves converted 14 points off 11 Sacred Heart turnovers. Jessica Smith led Stony Brook with nine points at the break which trailed the Pioneers 35-28.

In the second half, the Seawolves came out on fire, going on a quick 12-5 run to tie the score at 40. Smith converted four straight layups to tie the score but Sacred Heart's Amanda Pape scored five consecutive points and Kaitlin Sowinski had two layups to give the Pioneers a nine-point advantage at 49-40. After a Leah Getz free throw, Sacred Heart scored the next nine points, capping an 18-1 run before Mykeema Ford scored on two layups on back-to-back possessions.

Smith led the Seawolves with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Ford added 16 points, continuing her streak of 11 double-digit games this season. Kelly Watson had 9 points on 3-6 shooting from behind the arc and Dana Ferraro had six points and eight rebounds. For Sacred Heart, Pape led all four scorers in double figures with a game-high 26 points. Kaitlin Sowinski had 19, Lisa Moray had four threes for 12 points and Kerri Burke had 10.

Stony Brook returns to action on December 30 at 7 pm. when it faces St. John's in the last non-conference game of the season before opening up the America East schedule at home vs. Hartford on January 4.
