Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook rallied from an early 4-0 deficit but it was not enough as the Seawolves fell to Colgate 8-7 in the two teams season-opener on Saturday afternoon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. With the loss, the Seawolves fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Raiders improve to 1-0.

"Colgate is a strong competitor and even though we didn't get the win today, we played with a lot of heart and played as a team the whole time," said first year head coach Allison Comito. "I'm proud of the way the team fought its way back into the game and played until the last whistle. I expect to see a lot of good things from this team this season."

Colgate came out strong, netting four unanswered goals over the opening 11:17 of the game capped by an unassisted tally by Maddie Kerns.

The Seawolves answered back, as Kaitlin Leggio's first career goal with 17:45 to go in the first half kicked off a 4-0 run by the Seawolves capped by a score by Carlee Buck eight mintues into the second half to knot the game at four.

Less than a minute later, a free position goal by Megan Jansen put the Raiders back up, 5-4, but Buck's unassisted goal at 19:25 tied the game up once again.

The visitors pulled away again, using three straight goals capped by Kerns second goal of the game to make it 8-5 with 11:37 to play.

The Seawolves would not go away, however, as Stephanie DeGennaro converted a feed from Katie Savino and Buck netted a free position to cut the lead to 8-7 with 49 seconds remaining. That was as close as Stony Brook could get, however, as the Radiers won the ensuing draw control and ran out the clock.

Buck led the Seawolves with three goals, while Jen Sandtorv (0-1) made 14 saves in the loss.

Katie McVeigh and Kerns each netted a pair of goals for Colgate, while Sue Bielamowicz (1-0) turned away 10 shots in the victory.

The Seawolves are back in action on Friday when they host Mount St. Mary's at 3:00 p.m.
