The 12th-ranked Boston University women's lacrosse team scored 11 straight goals in the first half as the Terriers cruised to a 16-5 victory over Stony Brook in the two teams' America East Conference opener on Saturday at Nickerson Field. With the loss, the Seawolves dropped to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in league play, while the Terriers improved to 5-2 and 1-0.
Stony Brook opened up the scoring as Kaitlin Leggio found the back of the net just 18 seconds into the contest. The Terriers answered right back as Lauren Morton's unassisted tally at 27:12 set off an 11-0 BU run over the next 19 minutes. Morton and Jenny Hauser each netted a pair of goals in the spurt, while Mary Beth Miller tallied the final three goals of the run to give the Terriers a commanding 11-1 advantage with 8:35 to go in the first half.
Leggio added a pair of goals in the final three minutes of the half and Stony Brook pulled back to 12-3 at the break, but the Terriers never looked back en route to the 16-5 win.
Leggio finished with four goals and five ground balls while Amy Taylor netted a goal and Carlee Buck added an assist in the loss. Jen Sandtorv (4-3) took the loss in net, turing away four shots. Gina DeNezzo came on late in the first half and made seven saves.
Miller finished with game-highs of five goals and three assists, while Hauser added three goals and an assist. Jenna Golden picked up the win, making four stops, while Colleen McClay made four stops in the second half.
The Seawolves are back in action next Saturday at Binghamton.
