Jason Cappadoro scored twice and had three assists but it was not enough as Army held off Stony Brook for an 11-9 win Tuesday night at Michie Stadium. John Walker's goal and four assists led the way for Army which improved to 1-2 while the Seawolves fell to 0-3.
Leading 5-3 at the half, Army used a four-goal run in the third quarter to take a commanding 9-3 advantage. Mike Obringer's man-down goal ignited the outburst at the 12:36 mark that was capped by a man-up tally from Ryan Chase at 8:37.
Sean Chamberlain's second goal of the game late in the third stopped the Army onslaught and sparked a three-goal run for SB in a span of 2:02. Ryan Hughes and Rhys Duch tallied in that stretch to send the visitors into the final stanza down 9-6.
Army's Kevin LoRusso pushed the lead back to four goals at 14:09 of the fourth quarter to halt the Stony Brook comeback. The teams traded goals before Jason Cappadoro and Bo Tripodi inched Stony Brook closer late in the game but the rally fell short.
Walker opened the scoring at 12:03 of the first quarter to give Army a 1-0 lead. Obringer made it 2-0 only 27 seconds later and Matt Scheel's tally at 5:28 gave the hosts a 3-0 lead.
Jason Cappadoro got the Seawolves on the board with his second goal of the season at 4:45 of the first but Army responded with a goal from Jim Burton to make it 4-1 after one quarter.
Trailing 5-1 in the second quarter, the Seawolves offense came to life when Tripodi neatly deflected a Cory Conway pass by Adam Fullerton to cut the lead to 5-2. Chamberlain drew Stony Brook closer with his third goal of the season that was set up by Cappadoro at the 7:05 mark and the Seawolves trailed 5-3 at the break.
Cappadoro led the way for Stony Brook two goals and three assists. Tripodi finished with three goals and Chamberlain added two.
Brendan Callahan made nine saves in the loss. The Seawolves turned the ball over 18 times.
Stony Brook returns to action on Saturday when it host Siena. Face-off is 1 p.m.
