Rookie Kaitlin Leggio netted a Stony Brook single-game record seven goals to lift the Seawolves to a 13-10 victory over Vermont in the two teams' regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. With the win, the Seawolves improved to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in America East action, setting new single-season program marks for wins in a season and league wins in a season. The Catamounts end their year at 6-10, 1-5.
Stony Brook took a 3-0 lead at the 16:40 mark of the first half on a pair of goals by Leggio and another by Danielle Werner, but UVM's Becky Kenison ended the run with back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 3-2 with 10:32 to play.
The Seawolves answered back, striking for three goals in a span of 37 seconds as Amy Hallion, Carlee Buck and Leggio each found the back of the net to push the SB advantage to 6-2 with 9:02 on the clock.
The Catamounts would add a pair of goals, including an unassisted marker by Kenison with 48 seconds remaining in the half, to cut the lead to 6-4 at the break.
The Seawolves scored four of the first six goals of the second half to make it 10-6 with six minutes to play, but the Catamounts would not go away, scoring back-to-back goals 12 seconds apart to pull within 10-8 at 5:08.
After a Leggio goal stopped the run, Kenison struck for her fifth goal of the game to make it 11-9 at the 3:00 mark. Amy Taylor and Kristen Millar traded goals 11 seconds apart to make it 12-10 before Leggio put the game away with her seventh of the game with 35 seconds to play.
Buck finished with two goals while Taylor and Kristen Dupuis each added a goal and an assist. Gina DeNezzo (1-1) earned the victory in net, turning away eight shots in the first half, while Jen Sandtorv made 10 stops in the second half.
Kenison finished with five goals for Vermont, while Millar added two goals and an assist. Meaghan Hanley took the loss in net, turning away seven shots.
The game served as Senior Day for seven Seawolves who played in their final home contest. Seniors Stephanie DeGennaro, DeNezzo, Jill Gridley, Jennifer Joyce, Jessica Stoker, Marrisa Trachtenberg and Werner were all honored in a pregame ceremony.
The Seawolves are back in action on Friday in the opening round of the America East Tournament.
