Kate Collins scored a goal in the 16th minute as the Stony Brook women's soccer team defeated Binghamton, 1-0, in the Seawolves America East conference home opener at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Thursday evening. With the win, Stony Brook is 6-4-1, 1-1-0 in conference play while Binghamton is 3-6-2, 0-2-2.
After sophomore forward Brooke Barbuto took the ball at midfield, and dribbled past three Bearcat defenders, she found a streaking Kristin Mishrell down the left side of the field. Mishrell crossed the ball from deep in the left corner to Kate Collins, who one-timed the ball with her left foot by goalkeeper Kristie Bowers into the right side of the net to give Stony Brook a 1-0 advantage.
Stony Brook controlled much of the contest and outshot the Bearcats 17-11 in the contest.
Marisa Viola stopped eight shots in the win for Stony Brook and picked up her 4th shutout of the season. Bowers made six stops in goal for Binghamton.
Stony Brook travels to Baltimore to take on UMBC on Sunday, October 1 at 1:00 pm.
