Nov. 14, 2007

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Aly Young (Lodi, Calif) had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Senior Dana Ferraro (Middlesex, N.J.) added 13 points and 12 rebounds as the Stony Brook women's basketball team held Sacred Heart to just 27 percent shooting in its 52-47 win on Wednesday night at the Stony Brook University Arena. Stony Brook is 2-1 on the season while Sacred Heart is winless at 0-2.

"I was pleased with our play in the second half," head coach Michele Cherry said. "We turned the ball over too much but we got great efforts from Aly and Dana and Morgan Patrick was key for us blocking four shots. Our free throw shooting was a key component for us tonight. Sacred Heart is a tough team and when you win 84 games the last four years like they did, a win against them is key."

Sacred Heart jumped out to a 5-0 lead before senior Morgan Patrick (Burlington, N.J.) scored the Seawolves first two points on a jump shot in the paint. Neither team was able to score as Stony Brook's biggest lead was just four points midway through the first half. After Lindsey Greenlee tied the game with 8:27 left in the half, the Seawolves maintained control of the half and took a 24-19 lead into the break.

The Seawolves continued to control the pace, leading by as many as nine after a jumper from junior Cheri Davis (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) with 11:45 remaining in the game. Sacred Heart went through a five-minute stretch shooting 4-17 from the field as Stony Brook maintained its lead. The Pioneers got as close as three with 24 seconds left after a Lisa Moray three-pointer. Following a time-out from Sacred Heart and with the ball underneath the basket, Ferraro passed the ball to Young who was out of bounds. Young threw a baseball pass to a streaking Ferraro for an easy layup as Stony Brook held on for the win.

Young's first career double-double earned her America East player of the game honors. Ferraro's double-double was the 18th of her career. Young and Ferraro also combined to shoot 13-16 from the free throw line. Freshman Jodie Plikus (Waterford, Conn.) had seven points and Davis and freshman Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.) each had six.

For the Pioneers, Kaitlin Sowinski had 15 points and four rebounds. Khalia Cain had nine points and five assists.

Stony Brook is quickly back in action with a game against Marist College of the MAAC on Friday night. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm.
