Stony Brook, N.Y. - Central Connecticut's Kerrianne Dugan hit seven free throws down the stretch and the Blue Devils overcame an 11-point second-half deficit as they topped the Stony Brook women's basketball team, 61-59, at the Stony Brook University Arena on Wednesday evening. Central Connecticut records its first win of the season and is now 1-9. Stony Brook falls to 3-6.

"We let this game slip out of our hands," head coach Michele Cherry. "We had a chance to put them away and to their credit, they fought back. We need to make sure that we play 40 minutes of basketball every night."

Freshman Jodie Plikus (Waterford, Conn.) would get the Seawolves started, coming off the bench at the 16:59 mark and hitting her first two three-pointers attempted as Stony Brook took an early 12-7 lead. After two ties and a basket from Central Connecticut's P.J. Wade, Stony Brook held the Blue Devils scoreless for the next 10 minutes as it took a 22-18 lead.

Stony Brook's biggest lead of the half was six and it took a 30-25 lead into the locker room after senior Aly Young (Lodi, Calif.) hit a three-pointer just before the half time buzzer sounded.

After layups from senior Dana Ferraro (Middlesex, N.J.) and freshmen Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.), neither team would score for over three and a half minutes until Plikus hit two free throws. Stony Brook's eight-point lead would be its biggest of the game to that point after Plikus his her third three of the night.

Kanita Boone's jumper with 12:03 left in the game got the Blue Devils within three before a layup from Jeter and a three-pointer from Freshman Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.) got the Seawolves' lead back up to eight. Following a jumper from sophomore Kairsten Nunn (Bowie, Md.) that gave Stony Brook a 53-42 lead with 6:22 remaining, Central Connecticut would go on a game-changing 15-0 spurt and end the game on a 19-6 run. Dugan had 13 of the Blue Devils' 19 points during the run.

Young's three-pointer would cut the Central Connecticut lead to just one with eight seconds remaining but Stony Brook was not able to catch up and fell 61-59.

Young and Jeter each finished with 12 points on the night and Plikus had 11 as she was named America East Player of the Game. Nunn added nine points and Horsey had seven points, five assists and four rebounds.

Dugan had a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds. Wade finished with 13 points.

Stony Brook is home on Friday night when it hosts Dartmouth College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm.
