Box Score

New Haven, Conn. - Foul woes in the first half hurt the Seawolves as they couldn't overcome an early first-half deficit as Yale topped the Stony Brook women's basketball team, 81-64, at the John J. Lee Amphitheater on Friday night. With the loss, Stony Brook drops to 3-5 while the Bulldogs win their first game and move to 1-5 on the season.

"We got in early foul trouble in the first half and we couldn't overcome that," head coach Michele Cherry said. "We allowed them too many shots in transition and layups. We'll work on our defense and be ready for Central Connecticut."

Stony Brook made two of its first three shots from the floor aided by four Yale turnovers. Foul trouble would be the Seawolves' Achilles Heel in the first half as they allowed Yale to enter the double bonus with over nine minutes left in the first half. However, Yale, who shot just 13-19 from the free throw line in the first half, still took its biggest lead of the first half, 22-11 with 8:32 left in the half. Stony Brook would go on a 9-1 run to cut the lead to just three. Freshman Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.) sophomores Kairsten Nunn (Bowie, Md.) and Crystal Rushin (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and senior Dana Ferraro (Middlesex, N.J.) all had six points for Stony Brook, who overcame 16 first-half fouls to trail just 39-33 at halftime.

Yale opened up the second half on a 13-5 run to take its biggest lead of the game, 52-38 before senior Aly Young (Lodi, Calif.) converted two layups from the right side to stop the run. The Bulldogs answered back, taking a 68-46 lead on a jumper from Mady Gobrecht and a three-pointer from Jamie Van Horne.

Yale put them game away in the second half helped by Melissa Colbourne, who had a game-high 27 points.

Stony Brook was led by Young's 11 points as she was named America East player of the game. Ferraro and freshman Jodie Plikus (Waterford, Conn.) had 10 points.

Stony Brook returns home against Central Connecticut State, Wednesday. Tip-off at the Stony Brook Arena is set for 7 pm.
