The Stony Brook women's basketball team rallied from 12 points down in the second half to defeat the Boston University Terriers, 83-77, at Case Gym on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Seawolves improve to 13-10 overall and 9-2 in America East play. Boston University falls to 12-12 and 4-7.
"Cheri played a terrific game for us today off the bench," said head coach Maura McHugh. "We came out flat in the first half but I am pleased with our aggressive play in the second half and how we crashed the boards."
After trailing by as many as 12 with 15:03 left in the game, Stony Brook outscored Boston University 40-22 the rest of the game. The Seawolves rallied to grab their first lead of the second half with 5:02 to play when a Dana Ferraro jumper gave them a 70-68 lead. Following a three pointer from Katie Meinhardt, Leah Getz hit two clutch free throws to tie the game at 71 and give the Seawolves a 72-71 advantage. Cheri Davis came up huge off the bench in the second half, grabbing seven rebounds and scoring nine points as the Seawolves pulled off a come from behind victory, 83-77. In the second half the Seawolves outrebounded the Terriers 24-15 and shot 22-of-27 from the charity stripe.
Neither team was trigger shy in the opening half as the two teams combined for nearly 60 shots and 75 points of total offense. Both teams failed to gain control of the game in the early going and fueled by six points from Meinhardt and four from Aly Hinton, the Terriers closed out the first half on a 13-4 run and grabbed a 41-34 lead heading into the locker room. Jessica Smith led the Seawolves with 12 first half points.
Mykeema Ford, the America East co-player of the game, scored 23 points to lead Stony Brook. Leah Getz scored 18, Smith added 15, Ferraro scored 10 and had 10 rebounds and Davis scored nine off the bench.
Hinton, the America East co-player of the game, scored 21 points to lead the Terriers.
The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, February 14 when they host New Hampshire at 7:00 p.m. It is date night at Stony Brook University Arena and tickets for couples this Valentine's Day match-up are buy one get one free.
