Binghamton was held to just 37 percent shooting as the Stony Brook University women's basketball team topped the Bearcats, 71-62, at Binghamton University's Events Center on Wednesday night. The Seawolves win their 11th game out of 12 and moves to 15-10, 11-2 in America East play. Binghamton is 10-16, 6-7. The win is Stony Brook's first win at Binghamton in its last nine tries and is the Seawolves first win at the Events Center.
"Mykeema is a special player for us and tonight was no different," said head coach Maura McHugh. "Tonight's win took a total team effort and I'm happy to get a victory."
Stony Brook opened up game with a 10-0 run and forced the Bearcats into three early turnovers. Binghamton responded with a 9-0 run of its own to cut the Stony Brook lead to 12-9 with just under 12 minutes to play. Binghamton got within one twice and took its first lead of the half, 23-21, after Rebecka Lindgren hit a three-pointer from the left side with 3:47 left until halftime.
The Seawolves re-took the lead, 29-28, after Kelly Watson hit a jumper just outside the lane with 49 seconds left in half. The Seawolves utilized a balanced attack as seven different players netted points in the opening half led by 10 from Mykeema Ford.
Stony Brook came out of the locker room hot and connected on its first four field goals. Jessica Smith, who was in foul trouble early, had two layups to give the Seawolves a 38-34 lead. After Ford converted on a conventional three-point play, Brianna Thompson hit a jumper to cut the lead to 43-40. Thompson scored 10 of the first 14 points Binghamton scored in the second half.
Stony Brook opened up a 56-47 lead, its biggest of the half, when Watson hit a jumper just inside the lane with just over eight minutes to go in the game.
Binghamton got within four points but Stony Brook held on for a 71-62 victory.
Ford led the Seawolves with a game-high 28 points, including 12-13 from the free throw line and was named America East co-player of the game. Watson had 14 points, Smith added 12 and Leah Getz had 10 points.
Thompson had 14 points for the Bearcats and was named America East co-player of the game.
Stony Brook returns to action on Saturday, February 24 when it takes on the Vermont Catamounts. At halftime, Stony Brook will honor the 1986-1987 women's basketball team which went 24-5 and advanced to the NCAA tournament. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 p.m.
