The Stony Brook women's basketball team fell to Hartford, 65-47, at the Chase Family Arena on Sunday afternoon. Hartford improves to 15-7, 8-1. Stony Brook loses its first conference road game and gets its first loss since January 4 and goes to 11-10, 7-2 in America East play.
"We just weren't able to convert on our second chance points," said head coach Maura McHugh. "We just need to shoot the ball better."
Both teams had a rough start with the Seawolves finally converting their first basket of the game off a Jessica Smith layup after missing on their first six possessions. Hartford fared no better, going the better part of over seven minutes without a point to start the game. The Hawks got its first points when Diana Delva hit a layup.
Both teams continued to shoot the ball poorly. The Seawolves tried to capitalized, opening up an 18-9 lead on two Mykeema Ford free throws. Stony Brook went silent going scoreless the rest of the half while Hartford went on a 14-0 run to close the half and give the Hawks a 23-18 lead.
Hartford extended the run to 18-0 before Ford hit a three to cut the lead to six at 27-21. Stony Brook got within five, 37-32 but were unable to get closer as Hartford lead by as much as 18 as Hartford won 65-47.
Ford lead the Seawolves with 22 points and was named the America East co-player of the game. Jessica Smith added 12 points.
Delva scored 24 points for the Hawks and was Hartford's America East player of the game. Ikea Witt had 17 points and Danielle Hood chipped in with 15.
Stony Brook returns home to face the UMBC Retrievers on Wednesday, February 7. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm.
