Denver, Colo. -
Bo Tripodi tallied four goals as the Stony Brook University men's lacrosse team snapped No. 17 Denver's 18-game home winning streak in an 11-8 win in Denver, Colorado on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Seawolves improve to 2-1 on the season while the Pioneers drop to 3-3. It was the first road game of the season for the Seawolves.
"This is a great win for our program, "said head coach Rick Sowell. "To come into Denver and snap their 18 game home-winning streak says a great deal about our team. I am very proud of how our guys came out focused today and executed."
After Brad Patterson netted the first goal of the game for Denver, the Seawolves answered with five-straight man-up goals to take an early 5-1 lead. Tripodi and Sean Chamberlain each netted a pair while Owen Adams added one in the five-goal run. The Pioneers closed the gap to two after a pair of goals by Jon Paulson, including a man-down tally, cut the lead to 5-3 with 1:36 to play. A goal from Michal Trojanowski with 15 seconds left in the first half gave the Seawolves a 6-3 advantage heading into the locker room.
SB extended their lead to 9-4 as it received two goals from Bobby Trenkle and the eventual game-winner from Tripodi with 3:28 left in the third stanza. It appeared as though Stony Brook had a comfortable lead until a Seawolf was called for an illegal stick at the start of the fourth period, giving the Pioneers a three minute man-up advantage. Denver would go on to tally three quick goals, including two from Ilija Gajic, to slice the Seawolves lead to 9-8. However, the play of Tripodi and Ryan Hughes proved to be too much down the stretch as they each tallied a goal to give the Seawolves the 11-8 victory.Tripodi finished with four goals while Hughes added a goal and three assists in the win. Trenkle finished with two goals while Chamberlain recorded three points off a pair of goals and an assist. The Seawolves finished the game going 5 of 6 on extra man opportunites and Jimmy Astea won 11 of 17 face-offs. Brendan Callahan continued his strong play in net, making 11 saves in the game.
The Seawolves return to LaValle Stadium next Saturday, March 17, as they take on Penn State. Face-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
