Outscoring Vermont 5-1 in the second half, the No. 19 Stony Brook University men's lacrosse team shut down Vermont by a score of 9-4 on Saturday afternoon in America East action. The Seawolves, who have now won five in a row, move to 5-1, 1-0 in America East play while the Catamounts drop to 3-6, 0-1.
After the Catamounts opened up the scoring at the 13:49 mark off a goal from Sean Layton, the Seawolves wasted no time responding as Ryan Hughes found the back of the cage off a feed from Larry Cerasi just 43 seconds later to tie the game at one. 43 seconds later Dan Zwirko gave UVM their last lead of the game off an unassisted tally. Rhys Duch converted a man-up opportunity with just over two minutes left in the first quarter and classmate Bo Tripodi beat the horn as he buried a shot with three seconds remaining in the quarter to give the Seawolves a 4-2 advantage.
Vermont would strike first in the second quarter to cut the lead to 4-3 off a goal from Andrew Kelleher with 8:38 remaining. Chamberlain would net his first goal of the game with 5:36 left in the half to give SB a 5-4 advantage heading into the locker room.
The Seawolves defense clamped down in the second half as they allowed just one goal off seven Vermont shots. In the game, the Seawolves outshot the Catamounts 40-16. Bobby Trenkle tallied a man-down goal off a feed from Chamberlain before Cerasi netted a goal with 4:35 to play in the third quarter.
Layton opened up the scoring in the fourth quarter and would score the final UVM goal on the day with 11:18 remaining. The Seawolves would register the final three goals of the game, as Chamberlain, Hughes, and Owen Adams all tallied goals.
Chamberlain was outstanding in the game as he had a season-best five points off two goals and three assists. Hughes had a pair of goals and an assist while Cerasi, Trenkle, and Tripodi all finished with a goal and an assist.
Brendan Callahan made fives saves in the cage to preserve the win.
The Seawolves return to action in a key America East match up as they host No. 2 Albany on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
