In a game that saw a combined 29 goals, the Stony Brook University women's lacrosse team fell to Hofstra, 15-14, at Shuart Stadium in the Seawolves non-conference finale. The loss drops SB to 12-3 on the season while the Pride improve to 9-5.
With the Seawolves trailing 12-11 with 17:46 left to play, Stony Brook scored three goals in the next 1:05 to grab its largest lead of the game, 14-12. SB received goals from Amy Hallion, Amy Taylor, and Diana Caroleo during the stretch to hold a two-goal advantage with 9:55 remaining in the game. The Pride responded with the final three goals of the game, all coming in the next 2:01 to hold on for the win. Corrine Gandolfi's unassisted tally beat goalie Jen Sandtorv on a bounce shot while falling to the ground proved to be the game winner.
In a first half in which the Seawolves trailed 8-3 with 7:02 left in the first half, SB showed plenty of resilience, closing the first half out on a 4-0 run to head into the locker rooms trailing by one. Stony Brook netted four goals in a 2:36 span with Leggio, Taylor, Carlee Buck, and Katie Savino all finding the back of the cage to keep the Seawolves within striking distance.
Leggio finished the game with a goal and an assist while Buck and Emily Jaissle each added a pair of goals and assists. Savino and Taylor each chipped in with a hat trick in the contest. The Seawolves scored seven goals off just nine shots in the second stanza and were outshot 41-29 in the game. Sandtorv made eight saves in the game.
Casey McGrath netted a game-high five goals and Lauren Whitcomb found the back of the cage four times.
Stony Brook wraps up the regular season with an opportunity to claim a share of the America East regular season crown when they travel to take on conference-foe Vermont on Saturday afternoon. First draw is slated for 1:00 p.m.
