New York, N.Y. -
Stony Brook University's women's cross country team placed fourth out of 34 teams at the NCAA North East Regional on Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves were led by sophomore Holly Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand), who crossed 12th overall in a time of 22:00.0. On the men's side, Stony Brook finished 16th with sophomore Tim Hodge (Tawa, New Zealand) pacing the team with a 16th-place finish (32:18.8).
Stony Brook's women's team entered the race as the top-ranked team in the region, but finished behind Providence, Syracuse and Boston College.
"While we're disappointed with the fourth-place finish today, I feel the success we've had at Notre Dame and the Pre-NCAA meets, will help us receive an at-large bid," said head coach Andy Ronan. "If that is what actually happens, it is going to be a great achievement to make it to the NCAA Championships for the second straight year"
Freshman Lucy van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand) finished just two-spots behind her sister, crossing 14th (22:02.8), freshman Hayley Green (Wellington, New Zealand) finished 19th (22:10.9), junior Laura Huet (Carrickmines, Ireland) crossed 26th (22:21.8) and junior Jessica Hampson rounded-out the pack taking 47th (22:44.8). Stony Brook will learn its fate when the NCAA Championship field is released at 7:00 p.m. Sunday night.
In the men's race, Hodge was in contention to received an individual bid to the NCAA Championships, but came up just short.
"He had a very good performance," said Ronan. "It's disappointing he didn't make it, but he still has two more years to qualify. In regards to the rest of the team, I feel we did not perform up to our capabilities. We need to figure out why that was and solve it the problem so we can become a top-ten team next year."
Junior Alex Felce (Stroud, England) was second male Seawolf to cross the finish line, taking 30th overall (32:53.0). Junior Daire Bermingham (Carrickfergus, Ireland) finished 92nd (34:22.7), while freshmen David Frankel (Woodbury, N.Y.) and Gerard Harley (Setauket, N.Y.) crossed 124th and 127th, respectively.
If the Seawolves do qualify for the NCAA Championships, they will travel to Terre Haute, Ind. on November 24th. The meet is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
