Final Stats

Fairfield, Conn. - Kaitlin Sowinski led a balanced Sacred Heart attack with 15 points and seven rebounds in its 81-42 win over the Stony Brook women's basketball team at the Pitt Center on Wednesday evening. The Pioneers won their first game of the season and are 1-5. Stony Brook falls to 0-6. Sophomore Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.) led Stony Brook with 13 points to earn America East Player of the Game honors.

We had trouble making shots in the first half and that hurt us," head coach Michele Cherry said. "Unfortunately, this is becoming a trend we'd like to avoid."

Sacred Heart jumped out to an 11-2 lead helped largely by four Stony Brook turnovers. Back-to-back jumpers from Horsey cut the Pioneers lead to four, 13-9, with 12:19 to play in the first half.

After Sacred Heart took a 20-11 lead, sophomore Samantha Norwood (Perth, Australia) nailed a three, cutting the margin to six and snapping a three-minute scoring drought. However, the Seawolves were unable to score the next four minutes and the Pioneers opened up a 29-18 lead.

After sophomore Ariel Brown's (Lumberton, N.J.) basket cut the lead back down to nine, Sacred Heart closed the first half on a 9-2 run. The Seawolves, who were plagued by foul trouble, trailed 38-22 after one half. Sacred Heart out-rebounded Stony Brook 27-11 after the first 20 minutes.

Sacred Heart opened the second half on a 13-3 run, taking a 51-26 lead before a three from Horsey ended the run. Following the Horsey three, Sacred Heart used a 20-5 run over six minutes to put the game away. The Pioneers led by as many as 39 points and won going away, 81-42.

Sophomore Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.) chipped in with eight points and four rebounds and junior Joia Daniels (Silver Spring, Md.) added three points and seven rebounds.

Alisa Apo and Stephanie Ryan had 14 points and 11 points, respectively, for Sacred Heart, which out-rebounded Stony Brook 52-28.

The Seawolves play their first home game in almost a month when they take on Northeastern on Saturday afternoon at Pritchard Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 2 pm.
