Box Score
Burlington, Vt. -
Amy Rosenkrantz had a game-high 22 points to lead four Vermont scorers in double figures as it shot 60 percent in the second half and defeated the Stony Brook women's basketball team 71-51, at Patrick Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.) led the Seawolves with team-highs of 16 points and five rebounds. Vermont is now 15-7, 6-3 while Stony Brook is 6-16, 1-8.
"We hurt ourselves with poor free throw shooting and turnovers," head coach Michele Cherry said. "We can't give a quality team like Vermont more opportunities than it already has. Amy Rosenkrantz had a nice game for them and Kelli Poles gave them a nice lift."
Vermont took an early 17-6 lead by forcing three steals and converting them into six points in transition. Amy Rosenkrantz and Kelli Poles combined for 13 of the Catamounts' first 17 points.
Eventually, the Seawolves cut into Vermont's double-digit lead after Jeter scored the first of her four consecutive baskets. Her next three baskets cut the lead to just 22-17 with 5:23 left in the half.
After Vermont went back up 30-19 and even with the Seawolves poor shooting in the first half, they were down by only seven at halftime. On consecutive possessions, senior Morgan Patrick (Burlington, N.J.) hit a layup and freshman Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.) rebounded sophomore Joia Daniels' (Silver Spring, Md.) missed layup in transition.
Opening up the first possession of the second half for Vermont, Stony Brook forced a turnover and then connected on the other end. Sophomore Kairsten Nunn (Bowie, Md.) came around a screen and hit a jumper from the foul line. The action continued to be played at a frenetic pace as both teams combined to score 19 points just four minutes into the half.
Vermont took its biggest lead of the game, 50-33 after Rosenkrantz hit a three from the right corner. A basket from sophomore Crystal Rushin (Valley Stream, N.Y) to make the score 50-35 with 10:21 left in the game was the closest Stony Brook would get the rest of the game.
Rosenkrantz's 22 points earned her America East player of the game honors. Courtnay Pilypaitis and Kelli Poles each posted double doubles with 14 points and 10 assists and 12 points and 11 rebounds, respectively.
Jeter's 16 points was enough to name her America East player of the game for Stony Brook. Nunn had 11 points, three assists and three steals.
Stony Brook returns to home to face UMBC on Wednesday night at 7 pm. The game against the Retrievers also marks Stony Brook University's hosting of "Think Pink" Night.
