Women's Basketball Falls to Boston University, 70-58

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Cheri Raffo had a game-high 25 points and Christine Kinneary had 18 points and seven assists as Boston University held off the Stony Brook women's basketball team, 70-58 at the Stony Brook University Arena on Saturday evening. The Terriers improve to 16-11, 9-5 while Stony Brook is 6-21, 1-13 in America East play.

"We battled a very good Boston University team today but at times we were too inconsistent," head coach Michele Cherry said. "In order to win in this league, you have to be consistent for all 40 minutes. We're building for the important part of our season, the conference tournament."

Stony Brook took an early 13-9 lead after jump shots from senior Dana Ferraro (Middlesex, N.J.) and freshman Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.) and a three from freshman Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.) on consecutive possessions. After Jeter's free throw made it 16-13, BU went on a 8-0 run to open up a 21-16 lead with 8:39 remaining in the first half.

Kasey Devine's jumper gave the Terriers their biggest lead of the half, a six-point advantage with 6:10 left. But the Seawolves answered with four straight points from Horsey to cut the lead to one with 4:15 remaining in the half. Horsey had a team-high nine points in the first frame as Stony Brook trailed Boston University, 30-28 at the half.

Raffo's 10 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half helped the Terriers take its largest lead of the game, a 52-36 advantage with 10:52 to play.

After Kinneary's free throws put the Terriers up by 18, Stony Brook began an 18-4 run over seven minutes to cut the deficit to just four with 2:23 left to play. Freshman Jodie Plikus (Waterford, Conn.) (8) and Jeter combined to score 14 of the 18 points during the run. Jumpers from Devine and Raffo on consecutive possessions stretched the BU lead up to eight. The Terriers went 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the final minute to seal a 70-58 win.

Ferraro led the Seawolves with a team-high 13 points to be named America East player of the game. Senior Aly Young added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Raffo was 10-of-19 from the field including 5-of-8 from behind the arc and she took home Boston University's Player of the Game. Kinneary was a perfect 8-of-8 from the line and Devine added 12 points.

Stony Brook plays its final road game of the season when it faces Hartford on Wednesday night. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm.
