Junior Jenna Celano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and freshman Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) each had four goals as the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team scored the first five goals of the game and beat Sacred Heart, 18-11 at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Stony Brook is 3-2 on the season while Sacred Heart is 2-4.
Cook got the Seawolves on the board in a hurry, scoring her ninth goal of the season just 46 seconds into the game. Following goals from senior Diana Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) and junior Amy Hallion (Glenelg, Australia), Celano scored back-to-back goals just 21 seconds apart.
After three straight goals from Sacred Heart, Stony Brook answered with three of its own. Freshman Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.) scored her first of three goals on the afternoon and Caroleo and Cook added tallies soon after. Djaha added another goal with 1:41 left in the first half to help Stony Brook take a 9-4 halftime lead.
Sacred Heart cut the lead to 10-6 before Cook and junior Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) added scores to put the lead back up to six, 12-6. Celano scored goals three and four to give Stony Brook its biggest lead since 5-0.
Katie Salamone (2) and Alyssa Harris helped the Pioneers get within 14-10 but three consecutive goals from Stony Brook put the game away.
Along with Celano's four goals, she added three assists for a game-high seven points. Caroleo and Djaha each had a hat trick. Freshman Jamie Carlson (Glen Cove, N.Y.) made four saves for her third win of the season.
Stony Brook travels to Monmouth for a game against the Hawks on Sunday afternoon. First draw control is scheduled for 1 pm.
