Women's Basketball Loses to Hartford, 72-41

West Hartford, Conn. - Top-seeded Hartford opened up the second half on a 13-2 run and defeated the No. 9 Stony Brook women's basketball team, 72-41 in an America East quarterfinal game at the Chase Arena. Stony Brook ends its 2007-08 season with an 8-23 record while Hartford moves to 25-5 and will await the winner of No. 4 Albany/No. 5 Binghamton.

"Give Hartford credit, they shot the ball well tonight," head coach Michele Cherry said. "We didn't shoot the ball well and that hurt us."

Stony Brook hung tough with Hartford in the early going, scoring on consecutive possesions to trail Hartford 7-6. Senior Aly Young (Lodi, Calif.) and sophomore Kairsten Nunn (Bowie, Md.) both connected on jumpers from right side. Senior Dana Ferraro (Middlesex, N.J.) gave the Seawolves their first lead, 8-7, after putting back a miss from Young.

Hartford's Mary Silvia gave the home team its biggest lead of the game, 16-8 after scoring five consecutive points. Stony Brook stayed with Hartford and took a lead of 19-18 after going on an 11-0 run capped by a jumper from freshman Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.). But an 8-0 spurt from Hartford helped it re-take a 26-19 lead with just over five minutes to play in the first half. Erica Beverly's eight first-half points helped Hartford take a 33-23 halftime lead.

Two jumpers from Danielle Hood, who was largely ineffective in the first half, and three threes from MaryLynne Schaefer gave Hartford a 21-point lead, 46-25, with 13:50 left in the second half.

Young, in her final game as a Seawolf, had nine points. Horsey and senior Cheri Davis (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) added six.

Diana Delva had a game-high 14 points for Hartford. Beverly added 11.
