Three days after a difficult 3-1 victory over the Manhattan Jaspers, Stony Brook's volleyball team cruised through the rematch, 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-8), in its first game of the Rose Hill Classic on Friday afternoon. The Seawolves had an extremely balanced offensive attack as four different players finished with five kills. The win evens Stony Brook's record at 4-4 while the Jaspers drop to 0-4.
The Jaspers had a strong start to the first set, grabbing an early 4-3 lead on a Stony Brook service error. However, Manhattan struggled with its attacking accuracy as they proceeded to make six attack errors and just two kills to help give Stony Brook a 13-6 advantage. The Seawolves never looked back as they finished the frame on a 12-4 run. Junior Lisa Doremus (Glendale, Ariz.) had a team-high three kills in the first set as sophomore Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) continued her great defensive play with four blocks.
Stony Brook carried its momentum into the second set, as it jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead behind three kills from sophomore Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.). The 6'1'' swing hitter would lead the Seawolves with four kills while recording a .500 attack percentage. Three different Seawolves recorded four digs as Stony Brook won the second frame, 25-11.
The Jaspers kept it close early in set three, trailing just 6-3 after a kill from Jaci Rahey. However, after a service error by Jackie Kapovich, the Jaspers struggled to get a sideout against sophomore Jeanette Gibbs (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.), who served for 11 straight Stony Brook points, including two aces, as the Seawolves won the final set, 25-8.
Stony Brook finished the match with a team attack percentage of .304, while recording ten team blocks and holding the Jaspers to a -.11 attack percentage. Senior Gulce Nazli Dikecligil (Istanbul, Turkey) led the team with 10 digs and five aces.
The Seawolves play twice tomorrow. Their first match is at 11:30 a.m. against Princeton, with the second slated to start at 7:00 p.m. against host Fordham.
