Sept. 4, 2008

Box Score

Kingston, R.I. - Stony Brook University's volleyball team lost to Rhode Island, 3-0 (17-25, 22-25, 18-25), Thursday night in the opening match of the Art Carmichael Invitational in Keaney Gymnasium. Senior Gulce Nazli Dikecligil (Istanbul, Turkey) led both teams with 13 kills and also had eight digs. Stony Brook falls to 2-2 with the loss while Rhode Island improves to 3-2.

The Seawolves held a 6-4 lead early in set one when they scored four-straight points on kills by Dikecligil and sophomore Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Wash.), an error by the Rams and a block by junior Lisa Doremus (Glendale, Ariz.) to open up a six-point advantage. However, the Rams rallied and finished the game on a 21-7 run, led by four kills from Stacey Yohannes, to win the set 25-17.

Rhode Island took the momentum from the end of set one into set two, opening up an early 4-1 lead on the Seawolves. Stony Brook did battle back though, tying the score at eight on a kill from senior Jessica Graham (Eastport, N.Y.). Another kill from Graham, two kills from Doremus, an ace from Dikecligil and two Rams errors eventually gave the Seawolves a 14-9 advantage.

The Rams would not go quietly, as they rallied back to tie the set at 19 on a block by Lindsay Lytle. After a Stony Brook timeout, Rhode Island scored three straight points before the Seawolves managed a sideout. Stony Brook then pulled within one at 22-21 on an ace from freshman Kelsey Sullivan (Hamilton, Va.). However, the Seawolves would not get any closer as the Rams received kills from three different players to finish the set, 25-22.

The third set was very similar to the second. The Rams opened up an early lead only to have the Seawolves rally back to tie it at eight and then take a 9-8 lead on a kill from Dikecligil. The teams went back and forth before Nelson knotted the score again at 12. Stony Brook stumbled down the end, managing just six more points, as the Rams finished the match with a 25-18 win.

Stony Brook's next opponent is Boston College, who it will play Friday afternoon at 4:30 pm.
