Volleyball Falls to Boston College in Five Sets

Sept. 5, 2008

Box Score

Kingston, R.I. - Leading two sets to one, Stony Brook's volleyball team dropped the final two sets to lose 3-2 (15-25, 27-25, 25-19, 17-25, 6-15) to Boston College Friday night at Keaney Gymnasium. Senior Gulce Nazli Dikecligil (Istanbul, Turkey) notched her second double-double of the season with 13 kills and 14 digs while freshman Kelsey Sullivan (Hamilton, Va.) finished with 20 assists and 10 digs. With the loss the Seawolves fall to 2-3 while Boston College improves to 3-2.

Stony Brook struggled out of the gate as the Eagles grabbed an early 10-5 lead in the first set. The Seawolves pulled within three at 11-8 after a kill by senior Jessica Graham (Eastport, N.Y.), but a team attack percentage of just .172 and five service errors were too much for Stony Brook to overcome as they dropped the first set 25- 15.

The second set was a back and forth battle as the two teams found themselves knotted at 24 apiece. A kill from Dikecligil gave the Seawolves the lead, but the Eagles quickly countered with a kill of their own from Taylor Williams. Junior Lindsey Gordon (North Patchogue, N.Y.) answered with her fourth kill of the set and junior Lisa Doremus' (Glendale, Arizona) kill won the set for Stony Brook, 27-25.

The Seawolves rode the momentum from set two into an early 6-1 lead in set three. Led by six kills from Dikecligil and nine assists from Sullivan, Stony Brook never trailed and was one set away from winning the match after the 25-19 set three victory.

The Eagles would not go away quietly, however, as they held Stony Brook to just a .088 attack percentage in set four. Despite eight digs from junior Michelle Burrola (Glendale, Ariz.), Boston College tied the match at two sets each with a 25-17 win.

The fifth and final set was never in question for the Eagles as they jumped out to an 11-0 lead. Four of those points came on attack errors by the Seawolves, who finished the set with an attack percentage of -.06.

Overall, Stony Brook had 56 digs on the night with four different players finishing in double-digits. Boston College's Brennan Clark led all players with 27 digs.

The Seawolves face South Carolina Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
