Kelli Poles had a game-high 17 points to pace four Vermont scorers in double figures in its 77-42 win over the Stony Brook University women's basketball team, at Patrick Gymnasium on Wednesday night. Amy Rosenkrantz added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Catamounts (8-8, 2-1), who never trailed in the game. Sophomore Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y) and junior Joia Daniels (Silver Spring, Md.) had 11 points to lead Stony Brook (2-12, 0-2).
"We got off to a bad start and had to play catch up the rest of the game," head coach Michele Cherry said. "We can't give a team like Vermont that much of a head start."
After Jeter scored the first basket of the game for Stony Brook, it went without a hoop for almost four minutes during which time Vermont went on a 9-0 run, opening an 11-2 lead. The Seawolves closed to within eight, 14-6 with 12:39 left in the half. Two possessions later, the Catamounts took a double digit lead it maintained the rest of the half. Vermont led by as many as 23 in the first half and led at the break, 43-21. Courtnay Pilypaitis led the Catamounts with 12 first-half points and junior Kairsten Nunn (Bowie, Md.) had seven to pace Stony Brook.
Vermont scored the first seven points of the second half before Jeter's basket at the 15:15 mark. The Seawolves got within 21 on their next possession but the Catamounts stretched the lead back up to 32. Vermont led by as many as 37 points in the second half.
In addition to Poles and Rosenkrantz, Vermont's America East Player of the Game, Pilypaitis had 14 points and May Kotsopoulos added 13 for Vermont, which had 24 of its 77 points from the free throw line.
Nunn finished the game with nine points and junior Sarah Kazadi (Bronx, N.Y.) had a career-high 13 rebounds. Daniels earned America East Player of the Game honors for her 11 points.
