Jan. 18, 2009

Final Stats

Vestal, N.Y. - Sophomore Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.) had a career-high 24 points but four scorers in double figures for Binghamton, including a career-high 32 from Andrea Holmes, was too much as the Stony Brook women's basketball team dropped a 91-86 decision to Binghamton at the Events Center on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.) had 18 points, 14 in the second half and sophomore Jodie Plikus (Waterford, Conn.) added 11 off the bench.

"I was proud of the way we were able to bounce back considering the way our last game turned out," head coach Michele Cherry said. "I would have liked us to get to the free throw line a little bit more and that ultimately decided the game."

Binghamton (7-10, 2-2 America East) and Stony Brook (2-13, 0-3) were both on the fire to start the game, combining to hit all nine of its field goal attempts. A three-pointer from Horsey gave the Seawolves a three-point lead, 14-11, and on their next possession Plikus connected from downtown, giving the visitors a six-point advantage.

Three-pointers from Andrea Holmes and Erica Carter and a pair of free throws from Laura Franceski helped the Bearcats comeback with an 8-2 run, tying the game at 19. After a fifth tie in the first half, the lead changed on consecutive possessions before Binghamton opened an eight-point lead, 28-20, aided by six points from Holmes. The eight-point lead was Binghamton's biggest of the half.

The Seawolves stayed close with the Bearcats and cut the deficit to just one after freshman Destiny Jacobs (Glen Burnie, Md) hit a layup from the right side. Junior Joia Daniels' (Silver Spring, Md.) two free throws with 2:28 left in the first half gave Stony Brook a 41-40 lead, its first since the 12:03 mark.

Binghamton ended the half on an 8-2 spurt, taking a 48-43 lead into the break. Horsey was spectacular in the first half, going 6-for-10 from the field, 1-for-2 from three and 2-for-2 from the line for 15 points. Carter led Binghamton with 14 points and Holmes added 13. The Bearcats were 17-for-20 from the free throw line in the first half.

Stony Brook answered Binghamton's 8-2 run to end the first-half with an 8-2 run of its own, taking a 51-50 lead on Horsey's jumper. After Jeter's jumper made the score 53-50, a three from Muffy Sadler tied the game, the eighth tie of the contest.

The Seawolves scored on 6-of-7 possessions over almost four minutes and took a 65-59 lead. Stony Brook maintained the lead until Carter's jumper with 7:03 left in the game tied the score at 72. Holmes took over from there, scoring 13 of Binghamton's next 14 points as it opened an 86-79 lead. The Bearcats led by as many as 10, 91-81 late in the game but Jacobs' layup and a forty-footer from Plikus as time was expiring made it a five-point game.

Horsey's career-high 24 points earned her America East Player of the Game honors. Jeter added seven rebounds in addition to her 18 points and Plikus was 3-of-9 from behind the arc.

In addition to Holmes' 32 points, she added five assists and four rebounds and was named to America East Player of the Game honors. Carter's 21 points were also a career-high. Binghamton shot 27-of-34 from the free throw line in the game.

The Seawolves return home to face New Hampshire on Wednesday night at Pritchard Gymnasium. Tip-off against the Wildcats is slated for 7 pm.
