Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook's women's tennis team got its dual match season off to a strong start today with a pair of 5-0 wins over St. Peter's and Sacred Heart. Eight different players picked up singles wins over the course of the two matches for the Seawolves, all of which came in straight sets.
It was a dominating performance against St. Peter's in the morning match. Two Stony Brook players, sophomore Anna Pieschl (Gothenberg, Sweden) and freshman Aylin Mehter (Massapequa, N.Y.), won their matches at Nos. 3 and 4 with perfect 6-0, 6-0 decisions. Junior Fanny Charliquart (Gueugnon, France) dropped just one game at No. 2 in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Joniesa Williams, while freshman Nini Lagvilava (Tiblisi, Georgia) won at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1.
The story was much in the same against Sacred Heart in the afternoon, as the Seawolves again won all five matches played in straight sets. Senior Paola Rodolfi (Asuncion, Paraguay) took a 6-1, 6-1 win over Darcy Demers to start things off for SBU. Sophomore Salome Mkervalidze (Brewster, N.Y.) took a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Julianne Kasindw, while sophomores Prerana Appineni (Hyderabad, India) and Katherine Hanson (Smithtown, N.Y.) each won their matches by the same 6-3, 6-2 score. In the contested doubles match the SBU team of Lagvilava and Pieschl took a 6-3, 6-2 win to complete the sweep.
Stony Brook will return to the courts next weekend, playing at both the ITA Regional Championships and at the Brown Tournament.
