Cross Country Places Seven On All-Academic Teams

Nov. 18, 2009

Cambridge, Mass. - Stony Brook's cross country teams had seven student-athletes named to the America East all-academic teams, the conference announced on Tuesday. The men's squad placed two runners on the all-academic team, while the women's team had five, the most of any America East school.

Sophomore Mark Appledorf (Hauppauge, N.Y.) tied for the highest GPA of any male, recording a 3.74 with a major in biomechanical engineering. Senior Alex Felce (Stroud, England) earned all-academic honors for the third time in his illustrious career. The 2007 America East Individual Champion, Felce was named the conference's scholar-athlete for men's cross country last year.

All five of the women's runners named to the all-academic team played vital roles in Stony Brook's third-straight America East Championship. Sophomore Hayley Green (Wellington, New Zealand) tied for the highest GPA of any runner on the team. Senior Laura Huet (Carrickmines, Ireland) is now a three time America East all-academic selection in addition to earning USTFCCCA all-academic honors as a sophomore. Juniors Lucy and Holly Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand) have been named to the all-academic team twice in addition to earning USTFCCCA all-academic honors as sophomores. Junior Lisa Voltaire (Stockholm, Sweden) earned all-academic honors for the first time in her career.

All-Academic squads for team sports are based on the number of athletes that participate in a contest at one time or are made up of 10 student-athletes for individual sports. To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team's games or competitions. In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration.
