Stony Brook University's men's basketball team will play its second game in three days on Monday night, traveling to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Fans can listen to the game locally on WUSB 90.1 FM or on goseawolves.org with Jeff Bernstein '92 and Mike Solano announcing.
The Seawolves are coming off a 60-46 victory over the NJIT Highlanders at Pritchard Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Bryan Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J.) scored a career-high 25 points and tied his career-best with five three-pointers for the Seawolves, who held NJIT to 32.7 percent shooting. Stony Brook improved to 4-1 with the victory, matching its best start since 1993-94.
Dougher shot 7-for-13 from the field and went 5-for-8 from three-point land in addition to tying his career-high with eight rebounds. His previous career-best in points came last season when he scored 24 at NJIT. Sophomore Dallis Joyner (Norfolk, Va.) added five points and tied a career-high with nine rebounds while sophomore Tommy Brenton (Columbia, Md.) grabbed nine boards in addition to recording a career-high five steals.
Stony Brook's hot start has gotten attention nationally as the Seawolves were in the others receiving votes portion of CollegeInsider.com's Mid-Major Top 25 poll. The Seawolves received six votes in the latest edition of the poll released on Nov. 23.
In its two road wins this season, Stony Brook has held its opponents to a combined 32.4 shooting while Dougher and senior Muhammad El-Amin (Lansing, Mich.) have combined to score 29.5 points per contest.
The Mountain Hawks return seven of their top eight scorers from a season ago, including 2009 All-Patriot League selections, seniors Marquis Hall and Zahir Carrington. After dropping its first two games of the season, Lehigh has won three in a row including home victories over Quinnipiac and Monmouth. Freshman CJ McCollum is averaging a team-high 16.4 points per game and has led the Mountain Hawks in scoring in all three of their wins.
Lehigh leads the all-time series, 4-2, and is 3-0 against the Seawolves in Bethlehem. SBU defeated the Mountain Hawks, 71-50, last season at Pritchard Gymnasium. Junior Chris Martin (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) scored a game-high 19 points while senior Desmond Adedeji (Landover, Md.) added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Seawolves, who closed the game on a 39-10 run. SBU dropped a 76-61 decision to the Mountain Hawks in its last visit to Bethlehem during the 2007-08 season despite a game-high 21 points from then senior, and current Director of Basketball Operations, Ricky Lucas.
