West Long Branch, N.J. -
Stony Brook University's women's basketball team fell to Monmouth, 61-45, at the Multipurpose Activity Center on Wednesday night. The Seawolves were led by juniors Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.) and Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.) who both tallied ten points on the night. Monmouth's Alysha Womack led all scorers with 15. With the loss, Stony Brook drops to 1-5 while Monmouth improves to 3-3.
"I'm disappointed with our performance tonight, especially after such a great start to the game," said head coach Michele Cherry. "We didn't play smart in the second half and gave up way too many offensive rebounds which led to second opportunities for them."
Stony Brook jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and would connect on all of its first five field goal attempts, including a pair of jumpers from sophomore Destiny Jacobs (Glen Burnie, Md.). Monmouth's outside shooting touch would pull them within two at 10-8 as Gabby Singer and Carly Thibault connected on back-to-back threes. There was no slowing the Seawolves offense, however, as they missed just three shots in the first ten minutes of the half and reopened their eight point advantage on a jumper from freshman Amanda Corona (North Hollywood, Calif.).
Over the next seven minutes of play Monmouth would shoot nearly 50% from the field as it put together a 14-5 run to grab its first lead of the game at 24-23 with 4:24 remaining. While the Hawks would move in front by as many as six, the Seawolves bounced right back to tie things at 29 on a bucket from senior Joia Daniels (Silver Spring, Md.). That would be SBU's final point of the half, though, as the Hawks went into intermission leading by four.
Following a first half that saw 52 total points, the two teams struggled to find their grooves offensively as they combined for just three made field goals and ten total points over the first 12:01 of the second half.
With baskets at a premium, Monmouth's three-point shooting proved to be the difference as three of its four field goals came from behind the arc. The Hawks were clutch on the line towards the end of the game, connecting on all but one of their 18 free throw attempts.
Horsey, who was named the America East Player of the Game, dished out four assists while recording a team-high three steals. She was also perfect from the line, going 4-for-4.
Stony Brook returns to Pritchard Gymnasium on Sunday for a contest against St. Francis (N.Y.). Tip is set for 2:00 p.m. and tickets can be bought online by clicking here.
