Boston, Mass. -
Jesyka Burks-Wiley led five Boston University scorers in double figures with 28 points as the Terriers snapped Stony Brook's three-game winning streak with an 89-71 win at Case Gymnasium on Wednesday night. Sophomores Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.) and Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.) led the Seawolves with 13 points apiece. Jeter added nine rebounds for Stony Brook (5-16, 3-6 America East), which will host Binghamton University on Saturday afternoon.
"They showed why they are the best team in the conference," head coach Michele Cherry said. "They gave us fits all night but I was proud that we fought and gave them a game."
Boston University (16-6, 10-0) led by as many as 12 in the first half, 17-5 after Christine Kinneary's three-point play. Following a Seawolves' timeout, sophomore Jodie Plikus (Waterford, Conn.) was inserted and provided immediate dividends, converting all three free throws after getting fouled. Baskets from Jeter and junior Kairsten Nunn (Bowie, Md.) and a three from Plikus capped a 10-0 run as Stony Brook trailed 17-15. The Terriers answered with back-to-back threes to stretch the lead to eight.
Two free throws from Jeter with 6:32 left in the half made it 31-29. Two more times Stony Brook cut the BU lead to just two with the final time coming after sophomore Ariel Brown's (Lumberton, N.J.) jumper from the left side.
Although the Terriers led for all 20 minutes, the Seawolves shot 13-for-28 (.464) from the floor and 8-for-9 (.889) from the foul line. Nunn led the Seawolves with nine first half points and Jeter had eight.
The Terriers scored on their first three possessions of the second half while taking a 47-36 lead. A jumper from Horsey cut the lead to 49-41 with 17:24 left but that was as close as Stony Brook got. A three-point play from Burks-Wiley gave Boston University a 66-51 lead with 11:45 left, its biggest to that point. Plikus answered on the other end with a three from the right corner.
While both teams combined to shoot 55 free throws, it was the Terriers that stretched the lead to as many as 21 points, going 18-for-21 from the line in the second half.
Burks-Wiley was 11-for-13 from the line and had nine rebounds to earn America East Player of the Game honors. Kinneary added 15 points and six assists. Jeter was Stony Brook's America East Player of the Game.
