Final Stats

Baltimore, Md. - Sophomore Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.) had a career-high 25 points but Carlee Cassidy was equally as good, scoring a game-high 26 points including 13-for-13 from the free throw line as UMBC defeated the Stony Brook women's basketball team, 77-58 at the RAC Arena on Saturday evening. The Retrievers, who shot 27-for-29 from the free throw line, also got 16 points from Michelle Kurowski. Sophomore Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.) added 10 points for Stony Brook (6-18, 4-8 America East), which split the season series with the Retrievers. UMBC is 14-12, 6-7.

"We had a lot of energy to start the game," head coach Michele Cherry said. "We just couldn't make shots tonight but give UMBC credit, they did."

Jeter was the spark for Stony Brook early, scoring five of its first seven points. UMBC answered back with seven straight and took its first lead, 12-11. It was all Cassidy for the Retrievers the first nine minutes of the game as she had 14 of their first 18 points.

After Jeter's basket at 8:54 made the score, 23-21, the Retrievers went on a 9-0 run, taking an 11-point lead, 32-21. Horsey's second three of the half cut the lead to 37-30 but Stony Brook was unable to make a basket the final 4:58, getting just a pair of free throws. UMBC led by as many as 11, three times in the first half and was up 42-32 at halftime.

Cassidy, who was 5-of-5 from the free throw line in the first half, converted six free throws and a basket for the Retrievers' first eight points of the half. Erin Brown's three-pointer capped an 11-2 run as UMBC took its largest lead of the game to that point, 53-34 with 15:58 left. Stony Brook, which went 14-for-16 from the line in the second half, hit only one field goal in the second half until junior Kairsten Nunn's (Bowie. Md.) long two with 9:48 left.

Katie Brooks jumper gave the Retrievers its largest lead of the game, 69-43 with 7:08 remaining. The Seawolves responded though, using a 13-4 run to get within 17, 73-56.

Jeter added 11 rebounds for her fourth career double-double as she earned America East Player of the Game. Cassidy set a school record for free throws made en route to America East Player of the Game honors as well.

Stony Brook continues its two-game road trip on Wednesday when it faces New Hampshire. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm.
