Oregon Edges Women's Lacrosse, 11-8

Feb. 22, 2009

Final Stats

Baltimore, Md. - The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team erased a six-goal deficit, getting to within three but a 6-2 halftime deficit proved to be too much in its 11-8 loss to Oregon. In a game played at Johns Hopkins on Sunday afternoon, junior Mickey Cahill (Bay Shore, N.Y.) was spectacular, making a season-high 14 saves for Stony Brook, which trailed by as many as six, 9-3. Senior Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) had three goals and sophomore Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist.

Oregon jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Leggio's goal at 13:22 ended the Seawolves' drought. The Ducks scored two more times before sophomore Samantha Djaha's (East Islip, N.Y.) goal made it 6-2. Cahill's seven first-half saves kept the Seawolves in the game as they trailed by four at halftime.

With the Ducks leading 9-3, a red card was called on Stony Brook junior Kelley Sweeney (Bay Shore, N.Y.). Playing a man-down, the Seawolves responded with two straight goals to cut the lead to 9-5. Oregon scored to make it 10-5 but Stony Brook did not go away, getting goals from freshman Abby Ford (Baltimore, Md.) and senior Amy Hallion (Glenelg, Australia).

Leggio's third and final goal of the game made it 11-8.

The Seawolves are back in action on Saturday, February 28 when they host LeMoyne at 12 pm.
