Final Stats
Baltimore, Md. -
UMBC's Kara Dorr scored four of her six goals in the first half as an 11-5 deficit was too much for the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team to overcome in an 18-11 loss to the Retrievers in the America East opener for both teams. Sophomore Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.) led Stony Brook with three goals and an assist and junior Jenna Celano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and sophomore Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.) each had two goals. Senior Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) broke Carlee Buck's school record for career points with a goal in the first half to give her 225 points. Stony Brook is 3-7, 0-1 America East while UMBC is 5-4, 1-0.
UMBC jumped out to a 3-0 lead before sophomore Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) got the Seawolves on the board with an unassisted goal at 18:31. The Retrievers and Seawolves traded goals including Leggio's tally at 16:48 that gave her the school record for career points. UMBC started to pull away with Dorr's three straight goals over two minutes while taking a 7-2 lead. Dorr's fourth goal of the first half on an assist from Coady made it an 11-4 lead before senior Kim Wodiska's (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) goal with 20 seconds left got the Seawolves within six entering halftime.
The Retrievers stretched their lead to as many as 10, 16-6, after a goal from Bria Phillips at the 20:35 mark. Stony Brook scored the next four goals, including two free-position goals from Celano, to make it a 16-10 game.
Stony Brook faces Hofstra in its next game on Wednesday night. First draw against the Pride is scheduled for 7 pm.
