Marist's Cristin Begley had a hat trick including the game-winning goal as the Red Foxes defeated the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team, 11-10 on Wednesday afternoon. Begley's third and final tally came with 4:09 left in the game. Senior Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and sophomore Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.) each had three goals and Leggio added two assists. Stony Brook falls to 1-4 and Marist is 2-0.
Both teams traded a pair of goals until Stony Brook took a 4-2 lead on goals from Leggio and Djaha. Lauren Ciccarello's goal with 1:24 left in the first half ignited a flurry as four goals were scored during that time. Ariel Kramer's tally tied the score at four but senior Amy Hallion (Glenelg, Australia) regained the lead for the Seawolves with her sixth goal of the season. Begley's goal with 33 seconds left in the half tied the score at five.
Marist gained a 9-6 lead when Kramer's second score of the game capped a three-goal spurt. Leggio had Stony Brook's next two goals but Stephanie Garland's eighth of the season gave Marist a 10-8 lead with 7:37 left. Djaha's third goal put the Seawolves within one but Begley's goal on an assist from Garland was the game-winner.
Hallion's goal with 49 seconds left got the Seawolves within one. Leggio gained the ensuing draw and sophomore Courtney Bertolone (Farmingville, N.Y.) had a shot but it was saved.
Stony Brook is back in action on Saturday when it takes on Yale for the first time in school history. First draw control is scheduled for 2 pm.
