Stony Brook-Brown Football Game to Help Benefit Sunrise Fund

Aug. 28, 2009

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook's 2009 home football opener against Brown University on September 19 will be a special day in more ways than one. In association with Childhood Cancer Awareness month, Stony Brook University Athletics will donate a portion of the gate proceeds to help support the Sunrise Fund.

The Sunrise Fund at Stony Brook University Medical Center was established to raise awareness about childhood cancer and to raise money to support hospital-based cancer services, innovative child and family programs, and research surrounding the causes of cancer and new treatments. Thirty-four children in the United States are diagnosed with cancer each day, with 65 to 70 new cases diagnosed each year in Suffolk County. The Stony Brook University Cancer Center is the only pediatric oncology center in Suffolk, and treats the majority of all children with cancer in the county. Money raised through the Sunrise Fund has enabled the creation of a nationally acclaimed program to re-integrate these children into school during treatment, and has supported cutting-edge research at Stony Brook into the causes of childhood cancer.

Brown, which will be making the first visit by an Ivy League football team to LaValle Stadium and is the defending Ivy League champion, will face Stony Brook on September 19 starting at 6:00 p.m. For ticket information please call 631-632-WOLF(9653) or visit Stony Brook's official athletics website at www.goseawolves.org.
