Looking to go 3-0 in the Big South Conference for the second straight season, the Stony Brook football team hosts Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon. Saturday's game marks the ninth annual Chief Raymond M. Downey Heroes Classic. Fans can listen to the game live on WUSB 90.1, with Mike Solano (pbp), Curt Hylton (color) and Jeff Bernstein (sidelines) providing all the action. Opponent
Charleston Southern (2-5, 0-3), picked fourth in the preseason conference poll, lost to VMI, 34-16, last week. Andrew Trudnowski passed for 326 yards and two touchdowns, but threw four interceptions. Gerald Stevenson caught seven passes for 129 yards and a touchdown. Stevenson has five touchdowns this season, including three on kick returns. He had a 100-yard kick-off return for a touchdown against Liberty and leads FCS in that category. Chris Patrick leads the Buccaneers with 54 tackles. Charles James has five of the team's 10 interceptions.

Stony Brook won the first meeting, 20-19, before Charleston Southern won last year's game, 30-27, in overtime. In the Seawolves' one-point win in 2008, Dayne Hoffman threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Adrian Sawyer with 1:06 left to tie the game at 19. Luke Gaddis, who kicked two field goals, converted the extra point. Eddie Gowins had two touchdowns in last year's game as Stony Brook rallied from a 10-point deficit, 27-17, but John Paglia kicked the game-winning field goal in overtime.
About Chief Downey
Ray Downey, the father of former Stony Brook All-American Chuck Downey '88, was the Chief of the Special Operations Command of the Fire Department of New York. He died in the line of duty while helping others escape from the World Trade Center on September 11. During his 39-year career with the FDNY, Chief Downey received five individual awards of valor and 16 unit citations. He also was awarded the Administration Medal in 1995 for his efforts on the Bunker Gear Program and interim quartermaster system. All Emergency Service Personnel, including FDNY, NYPD, EMS and military, receive free admission with a valid ID.
