Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.) scored a season-high 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds but Erin Rooney led four Monmouth players in double-figures with 16 points as the Hawks defeated the Stony Brook University women's basketball team, 74-60, on Tuesday night at Pritchard Gymnasium.

Sophomore Taylor Burner (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) added a career-best 11 points for the Seawolves, while junior Destiny Jacobs (Glen, Burnie, Md.) had nine points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Jeter was named Stony Brook's America East Player of the Game and moved past Janet Travis '79 into 10th place on Stony Brook's all-time scoring list (1,146 points).

Monmouth (4-2) jumped to a 13-5 lead, with Jeter scoring all five of the Seawolves points. The Hawks led 18-9 midway through the half following a bucket from Gabby Signer and Alysha Womack then hit two free throws to give Monmouth its largest lead of the game.

But Jacobs then scored three hoops over the next three and a half minutes to cut the Monmouth lead to 22-15. The Hawks answered with three consecutive threes though, two from Rooney, to build their lead to 31-15 with just under five minutes remaining.

A three-point play from Jacobs ended the Monmouth spurt and sparked a 7-1 Stony Brook run that cut the Hawks advantage to 10. But Rooney answered with a long three with the shot clock winding down and Monmouth headed into the break with a 37-24 lead.

Jacobs and Jeter each scored nine points in the half for the Seawolves (2-3). Rooney scored 14 in the opening 20 minutes for Monmouth, which went 5-for-9 from three.

The teams traded hoops over the first four minutes of the second half with Jeter and Burner scoring four points apiece. The Hawks matched their largest lead of the game at 48-32, with 14:39 remaining on a put-back hoop from Gena Broadus.

The Hawks eventually pushed their lead to 20 on a hoop from Adriana Allen before Burner answered with a three-point play with just less than 12 minutes left. Stony Brook trailed by 19 midway through the half before a three from sophomore Sam Landers (Springfield, Va.) made it 59-43.

But that is as close as the Seawolves would get until 37 seconds remained when sophomore Dani Klupenger (Aurora, Ore.) hit a three for the final points of the game. Stony Brook had just 12 turnovers and shot 43.8 percent from the field in the second half after shooting 31 percent in the first half.

The Seawolves have a quick turnaround, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
