Junior Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) had four goals and junior Mickey Cahill (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made nine saves, but it wasn't enough as Colgate topped the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team, 10-9, in the season opener for both teams. Sophomore Abby Ford (Baltimore, Md.) tallied a career-high four assists for the Seawolves, who forced the Raiders into committing 26 turnovers.
Stony Brook trailed by three, 8-5, after Kate Sullivan's only goal of the afternoon with 18:57 left, but the Seawolves rallied to tie it with goals from Cook and juniors Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.) and Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.) over a span of two minutes. Courtney Miller's third goal of the afternoon gave Colgate a 9-8 lead and Amanda O'Sullivan scored the eventual game-winner with 5:13 remaining.
Cook's fourth tally of the game, a free-position goal with 50 seconds remaining, cut the deficit to one, 10-9, but Colgate controlled the final draw control and ran out the clock.
Freshman Jessica Romano's (Massapequa, N.Y.) goal with 15:26 left in the first half tied the game at three. The Raiders rattled off three straight goals to take a 6-3 lead before Cook's tally 1:12 before halftime.
Cahill made seven of her nine saves in the second half. Colgate goalie Christina Roa finished with 12 saves.
Cook also finished with four ground balls as did junior Courtney Bertolone (Farmingville, N.Y.).
Stony Brook will travel next week to Colorado for games against Denver and Duquesne. First up for the Seawolves are the Pioneers on Thursday at 6 pm Eastern time.
