Women's Lacrosse Falls To American, 14-10

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook's women's lacrosse team fell to American, 14-10, at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Saturday. Four players including junior Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) had two goals for the Seawolves. Cook added two assists as well. Emily Stankiewicz and Lauren Schoenberger each had three goals for American.

Two goals from freshman Jessica Romano (Massapequa, N.Y.) in a four-goal span gave Stony Brook a 4-0 lead with 19:55 left in the first half, forcing American to change goalies. The Eagles cut the Seawolves' advantage to two, but goals from sophomore Jackie Hughes (Oceanside, N.Y.) and junior Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.) and sophomore Abby Ford's (Baltimore, Md.) score with 2:45 gave the Seawolves a 7-3 halftime lead.

Cook's team-leading 11th goal of the season gave Stony Brook its biggest lead of the game, 10-5. But American scored nine unanswered goals the rest of the way. Lisa Schaaf's goal with 10 minutes left proved to be the game winner.

In addition to her four points, Cook had a team-high five ground balls to earn America East Player of the Game honors. Hughes and Cable also finished with two goals apiece. Senior Kelley Sweeney (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and junior Courtney Bertolone (Farmingville, N.Y.) also had four ground balls. Junior Trish Molfetta (Carmel, N.Y.) tallied five draw controls.

Stony Brook travels to face Johns Hopkins on Wednesday afternoon at 1 pm. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
