Women's Lacrosse Falls To #19 Hofstra, 17-7

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Junior Courtney Bertolone (Farmingville, N.Y.) scored two goals in the first half as the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team trailed #19 Hofstra, 5-4, but the Seawolves were outscored, 12-3, in the second half and fell to the Pride, 17-7, on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman Nicolle Moran (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) also scored two goals for Stony Brook (2-5), which forced Hofstra (5-2) into 25 turnovers. Corinne Gandolfi led the Pride with five goals and an assist.

Moran scored her third goal of the season at 20:03 before Hofstra answered with three straight. Back-to-back goals from Bertolone tied the game at three with 3:19 left in the first half. After Hofstra took a 4-3 lead, freshman Kerry Kresse's (Setauket, N.Y.) second of the season tied the game with just a minute left. Gandolfi's goal with 24 seconds left gave the Pride a 5-4 halftime lead.

Stony Brook cut Hofstra's lead to 8-5 after junior Trish Molfetta (Carmel, N.Y.) scored unassisted at 26:34 of the second half. The Pride scored five straight goals and nine of the next 10 to lead by as many as 11, 17-6. Junior Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.) scored on a free-position shot and Moran tallied the game's final goal with 28 seconds left.

Freshman Justyne Passarelli (Glen Head, N.Y.) and senior Kelley Sweeney (Bay Shore, N.Y.) each recorded four ground balls. Molfetta had a game-high four caused turnovers.

The Seawolves are back in action on Saturday, March 20 when they take on Columbia at 4 pm in the second game of a doubleheader at LaValle Stadium. The men's team takes on Denver at 1 pm.
