Trailing by as many as six, Stony Brook's women's lacrosse rallied to get within one, but it was not enough as the Seawolves fell to Columbia, 15-13. Junior Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored a game-high four goals. Freshman Nicolle Moran (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) added a career-high three goals and an assist for Stony Brook (2-6), which committed a season-low eight turnovers. Taylor Gattinella, Brittany Shannon and Olivia Mann each had three goals for Columbia (3-2).
Junior Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.) scored with 3:21 left in the first half to make it 6-4, but a Columbia goal with 21 seconds left made it 7-4 after 30 minutes. The Lions took their biggest lead of the game, 10-4, at the 24:40 mark of the second half.
Cook scored the first of her four second-half goals as the Seawolves mounted a rally. Cook, who scored three of the Seawolves' next five goals, Djaha and freshman Matte Scully (Huntington, N.Y.) each recorded scores during the run as Stony Brook trailed 10-9 with 18:06 left.
Columbia scored two straight to make it 12-9, but goals from Moran and Cook (America East Player of the Game) got the Seawolves within one.
Shannon's goal with 5:55 left in the game made it 15-11. Freshman Jessica Romano's (Massapequa, N.Y.) goal made it 15-12 and Moran scored with 39 seconds left.
Juniors Courtney Bertolone (Farmingville, N.Y.) and Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.) also scored goals for Stony Brook. Djaha recorded a career-high six draw controls.
The Seawolves conclude non-conference play on Wednesday when they travel to take on Loyola at 2 pm. America East play starts next Saturday with UMBC at LaValle Stadium at 1 pm.
