Stony Brook University's women's lacrosse team fell to #15 Loyola, 18-7, on Wednesday afternoon at the Ridley Athletic Complex. It was the final non-conference game of 2010 for the Seawolves, who were led by junior Melissa Cook's (Bay Shore, N.Y.) two goals. Grace Gavin led the Greyhounds with five goals and two assists. Stony Brook is 2-7 while Loyola is 7-3.
Cara Filippelli scored two of Loyola's first four goals before sophomore Jackie Hughes (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) scored to make it 4-1 with 23:47 left in the first half. Cook and freshman Kaitlyn Harrison (West Babylon, N.Y.) also scored in the first 30, but Loyola led 14-3 at halftime.
Emily Gibson and Gavin each scored four goals in the first half.
Junior Mickey Cahill (Bay Shore, N.Y.) started the second half and was outstanding, finishing the game with 10 saves while allowing just three goals. Juniors Trish Molfetta (Carmel, N.Y.) and Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.) each scored second-half goals and finished the game with two draw controls apiece.
Freshman Melissa Rotante (Norwalk, Conn.) led the Seawolves with three ground balls and two draw controls.
Stony Brook begins America East play on Saturday, hosting UMBC at 1 pm.
