Raleigh, N.C. -
Stony Brook University's softball team lost both of its games during day two of the Wolfpack Challenge on Saturday. The Seawolves lost to Longwood, 7-2, and host North Carolina State, 9-3. With the losses Stony Brook drops to 3-5 on the season.
In Stony Brook's first game of the day, Longwood used four singles and a double to push across three runs in the first inning. Nicole Simmons had a two-RBI single to center to start the scoring for the Lancers. Stony Brook would answer right back in the bottom half of the inning, however, as senior Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) scored on a single through the right side by sophomore Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.).
The Seawolves wouldn't score again until the seventh inning, though, as Briana Wells allowed just four hits over seven innings. Junior Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) recorded five strikeouts in 5.2 innings of relief work for the Seawolves.
In game two against North Carolina State, the Wolfpack also jumped out to an early lead on Stony Brook, using a four-run second inning. NC State tacked on two more runs before the Seawolves got things going offensively. In the bottom of the fourth, SBU had a pair of runners on for Kavitsky who drove a home run over the right field wall to narrow the lead to three.
Four errors in two innings by the Seawolves allowed four unearned runs for the Wolfpack as North Carolina State pulled away for the victory. Matthes provided a strong effort in relief again, holding the Wolfpack scoreless in her 2.1 innings of work.
