Dec. 19, 2011
Senior guard Bryan Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J.) of the Stony Brook men's basketball team has been named one of 65 candidates for the Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award. The annual honor, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtics star Bob Cousy recognizes the top point guard in college basketball.
Dougher, who is a four-year starter for the Seawolves and has started all 103 games in his career so far, is the program's all-time leader in three-pointers made with 273 and is also eighth all-time in scoring at Stony Brook with 1,303 points. In Stony Brook's Div. I era (1999-present), Dougher is second all-time in scoring.
Dougher, who has now been a Bob Cousy Award candidate for three consecutive seasons, is a two-time All-America East second team selection and was named preseason All-America East prior to this season.
This season, Dougher leads Stony Brook in scoring with a 12.9 points per game average. He has scored in double figures in seven straight games, including putting up 21 points at Boston College on Dec. 11, all coming in the second half, which tied a career-high for points in a half. He is also the team leader in free throw shooting (.810), three-pointers made (25) and steals (10). He is currently sporting a 2.22 assist/turnover ratio.
The original list of candidates will be narrowed down to a final 20 by January 1st, final 10 by February 1st, and final five by March 1st. A premier Selection Committee will be appointed by the Hall of Fame to review the final five candidates in contention for the nation’s top collegiate point guard award. These Hall of Fame committees are made up of top college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, Sports Information Directors and Hall of Famers. The winner of the 2012 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at the Hall of Fame’s Class Announcement on Championship Monday in New Orleans as part of NCAA Final Four weekend.
Dougher and the Seawolves are on a 10-day break from game action and will resume play on Dec. 28 against Cornell at 7 p.m.
